Neighbors Helping Neighbors
In April of 2012, we held a general meeting of our Northeast Wilson Park Neighborhood residents at Salem Lutheran Church. The people attending identified several concerns and suggested activities for NEWPNA attention in upcoming years.
Foremost among these were: Extend Quiet Zone; Gateway Project Installation, Sitting Area & Art displays on River Bank; Clean up of Buckthorn on River Bank; and Establishment of a “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” service to assist the elderly and infirm with small home maintenance, tasks, small yard work/cleanup, and other needs.
We've been and still are working with the city on the Quiet Zone issue, circulating a petition for presentation to the Mayor in March, the Boy Scouts started the clean up of the buck thorn on the river bank, and the Gateway Project has been installed and will be becoming a butterfly/prairie garden site this spring and summer. We haven't gotten to the Sitting Area and Art displays planning yet, but are hoping to begin the Neighbors Helping Neighbors effort.
Our first step is to locate people within NEWPNA's area with skills, energy, and willingness to participate in providing this assistance to our friends and neighbors in need. The work might be in small groups or individually if the project is small. Once we know the capacities, skills and interests of helpers, a clearinghouse, so to speak, will be set up through NEWPNA and neighbors will be alerted to this opportunity for help. Helpers' contact information will not be given to those requesting help; they will be contacted by a NEWPNA member assigned to the clearinghouse, who will contact the helper.
If you feel you have the time, energy and some basic home maintenance skills, ie: painting, safety repairs, handy-person stuff, raking, shoveling, or even just stopping by for a visit if that's what's needed, please contact Charles at [email protected] for more information about the project, and hopefully to add your name to the Neighbors Helping Neighbors team. Thank you.
